Unintended uses opening in Nexus this Thursday. Attendance mandatory for all hackers.

NEXUS/foundation for today's art in Philadelphia, in conjunction with The Hacktory, presents "Unintended Uses," an exhibition of hacked and repurposed video games, electronics, kinetics, musical instruments, motion sensors, painting, computers, circuitry and public spaces. The artists are utilizing technology as their palette to open up worlds of new possibilities. The exhibition includes Michiel van der Zanden, Don Miller, Reade Vaisman, Sarah Muehlbauer, Kathy Marmor, Fernando Orellana, Zachary Stadel, Wil Lindsay, dylanSnow/Far McCon/Bryce Gibson, Chris Vecchio, Joey Mariano and David Horvitz.

"Whatever code we hack, be it programming language, poetic language, math or music, curves or colourings, we create the possibility of new things entering the world. Not always great things, or even good things, but new things. In art, in science, in philosophy and culture, in any production of knowledge where data can be gathered, where information can be extracted from it, and where in that information new possibilities for the world are produced, there are hackers hacking the new out of the old. While hackers create these new worlds, we do not possess them. That which we create is mortgaged to others, and to the interests of others, to states and corporations who control the means for making worlds we alone discover. We do not own what we produce--it owns us."

Now you can help map the whole world. Join Philadelphia's OpenStreetMap group.

January 13, 2009 6PM @ Avencia in Philadelphia.

OpenStreetMap is an editable map of the whole world, which is being built largely from scratch using GPS traces and other personal surveys. It is released with an open content license and available for free to anyone that wishes to use it. The project is a combination of software, data and knowledge. A variety of software tools have been developed to support online and off-line editing of the map data as well as its maintenance and distribution.

Our friends and sponsors from Avencia are organizing this month's OpenStreetMap meeting in Philadelphia. So, you can learn how map your own neighborhood; I'm sure a well mapped neighborhood is safer and has higher property values. You can also learn how to use this open data and software to create your next killer app. And, you will get to meet the folks at the region's most innovative GIS shop -- Avencia.

Founder Hacktory ... or Factory ... Either way, don't just stand there start something.

PHILADELPHIA ENTREPRENEURS FORGE 21ST CENTURY EVENT TO INSPIRE AND EDUCATE FUTURE BUSINESS FOUNDERS

Twelve months ago, entrepreneurs starting a new company in metro Philadelphia had no choice but to operate in a vacuum. In the fall of 2007, they banded together and built Philly Startup Leaders (“PSL”), with the goal of supporting one another and helping their companies grow. In less than a year, PSL grew to 300 members. And yet, that was not enough. Business founders cried out–they wanted to lasso successful local-area entrepreneurs and investors, corral them in a room, and soak-up their business lessons.

In response, PSL leaders, along with partner MAC Alliance, took it upon themselves to build The Founder Factory—www.FounderFactory.com, a unique one-day conference and networking event coming to Philadelphia on November 13, 2008, where wisdom from world-class Philadelphia-area business leaders is shared with the next generation of local entrepreneurs. Josh Kopelman, Managing Partner of First Round Capital, Lucinda Holt, Ernst & Young Philadelphia Entrepreneur of the Year, and many more all-stars have lined up to speak and lead panel discussions.

“I’m excited to sponsor and speak at The Founder Factory. The emergence of programs like The Founder Factory, PSL and DreamIt are important indicators of the vibrancy of Philadelphia’s entrepreneurial community.” says Josh Kopelman. “It is programs like these that will help inspire a new generation of start-up founders.”

Recognizing the importance of The Founder Factory, heavy hitters MAC Alliance, Morgan Lewis, Chariot Solutions, Ben Franklin Technology Partners, First Round Capital, Safeguard and Eight Eleven Inc. enthusiastically sponsor the program.
