In March the Klein Art Gallery at Science Center will present Selected Works by Alex Dragulescu. The exhibition will feature selections from the artist's series, Spam Architecture and Lexigraphs along with new works. Dragulescu's artistic practice involves experiments and explorations of algorithms, computational models, simulations and information visualizations that include data derived from databases, spam emails, blogs, malware, and video game assets.
In Spam Architecture, the artist generated a series of prints by creating a computer program that accepts as input junk email. Various patterns, keywords and rhythms found in the text are translated into elegant, yet bizarre three-dimensional modeling gestures. In 2008, the artist created Lexigraphs the first visualization from his ongoing Data Portraits series. Micro-blog authors use mobile text messaging or web interfaces like Twitter to post short answers to the question What are you doing?, creating a stream-of-consciousness account of their daily encounters, musings, plans and actions. Lexigraphs creates a self-portrait of the author through the use of salient words from an individual's postings to visualize the topical and temporal patterns.
