Recycled Electronics Jewelry Workshop - Saturday Aug 22

Electronic Jewelry You Can Make!

The Hacktory is offering a fun and unique Recycled Electronics Jewelry workshop on Saturday, August 22 from 1:00-5:00pm.

Artist and instructor Ann Warner of Lancaster says:

"In an ongoing effort by The Hacktory to find new ways to combine art with technology, we created a Recycled Electronic Jewelry Workshop. We'll be teaching basic jewelry-making concepts to people of all skill and age levels (10 years old and up), including design ideas, basic soldering and assembly skills, and a rich variety materials to create you're own jewelry and small sculpture.

"We'll be recycling old electronic components harvested by members of The Hacktory and provided by a generous donor from Lancaster.

"This workshop will add beauty and interest to the world by reclaiming and recycling things that would normally end up in our growing landfills. It will also be tons of fun and spark creativity in all who take it."

The cost to participate in this workshop is only $20, which includes all materials including a large selection of awesome-looking retro electronic components for building your own jewelry.

Pictured above are examples of recycled electronic jewelry made by instructor Ann Warner.

July 25 Drawdio Workshop Previewed in City Paper

City Paper blogger Morgan Davis wrote a nice piece in this week's print and web edition about The Hacktory's second(!) Drawdio workshop this Saturday 1:00-4:00pm.

http://www.citypaper.net/articles/2009/07/23/drawdio

Our first Drawdio workshop June 22 was packed and successful--and people were clamoring for more--so we're doing it again!

This second workshop will feature a more polished feel (we learned!) and use the latest Drawdio PCB design by LadyAda. All this publicity may result in another sold-out event, so reserve your seat now!

Thanks again to Morgan Davis for the free press! She's also psyched about writing a preview for our Electronic Jewelry class just scheduled for Aug 22 (here's some preview photos)

Drawdio class upon us this Saturday

photo of NTR/Hacktory

1/3 of the last months Drawdio class just walked in off the street, (see above photo of our street/location), without signing up first, (22 total). Things got a little crowded, like a big party. This month, we may find that most of you walk in. No problem with that, we can make change.

There are 15 slots available this month which are first come first served, either by preregistering or walk in. The reason to limit the class size is to improve quality. Also included this month is a booklet painstakingly assembled to provide documentation, reference schematics, homage to the designer, (Jay Silver who is kind to share his design with the rest of the world), photos and definitions of the parts and blank pages to draw your musical pictures on.

Feel free to come a little early to find a seat and get comfortable before the class starts at 1pm.

Open Hack Report: July 11th, 2009

time to cross

The pace here at The Hacktory Central is quickening. Despite the slow summer day, this Saturday felt tactical-- lots of people with a purpose getting things done.

We had Kris leading a contingent of people working on the 3d printer; we're figuring out the nuances of larger models and the effects of temperature on materials. More research needs to be done as we cut our teeth on 3d modeling and printing.

Georgia came by and we put together a class schedule for the next few months-- start reserving your evenings and weekends for awesome times; when we put things up on the calendar, you know they're going to be something to talk about. We've wrapped up the final details for our next invocation of our drawdio class; expect everything from last time and more fun added into the mix. Swing by and do something different on Saturday the 25th.

A bunch of new additions to our usual staple of projects. Not going to say more on that-- we've got to give you a reason to come by and see things in person.

Expect more awesomeness next time.

The next Open Hack is August 8th. See the calendar page for more info.

Back by popular demand, we offer this class for those who are interested in learning how to make stuff that makes electronic sound for cheap. Register in advance, show up no skilled, empty handed, and leave with a self-built pencil-synthesizer.

Out of the massive brain trust that is the Hacktory, there are a select few who will volunteer to help you build for yourself, your very own synthesizer at cost. If you missed our last Drawdio class, this is your next chance. Register today for one of the 15 slots we have for this class. $15

Roundtable discussion

It's that time again: July's Open Hack is this Saturday, 1-6pm. More details here. Expect the unexpected... as well as the usual: people will be showing off their projects, working on new ideas, and generally exchanging ideas. We've gotten a lot of interest in discussing new classes, so expect a lively discussion of what's coming up at The Hacktory.

All are welcome. Come by to meet some new people, show off a project, get some help, or help out the future of The Hacktory. There's something for everyone!
